In 1962, during the Cuban Missile Crisis, with a nuclear war looming, a key negotiator on the Soviet side was Anastas Ivanovich Mikoyan. Half a century later, his grandson, Stas Namin, travels to Cuba. The film reveals the unique spirit of freedom that permeates Cuba and Cubans of every social standing, age and economic circumstances. Everyone who visits the island even briefly can feel it. The spirit is reflected in their eyes and on their faces. It seems to fill the Cuban air. The Real Cuba features interviews with Cuban entrepreneurs, priests, medical doctors, dancers, artists, musicians, poor people, athletes, farmers and fishermen. They speak of the distinctive character of their country and its people, their understanding of the meaning of life, and the further development of Cuba with open borders.
