Martin Šulík was born in 1962 in Zilina. In 1986, graduated from VSMU in Bratislava as a film and TV director. In 1994, he started teaching in the same university. He has several features as a director behind him, including the awards winning Neha (Special Mention from Cottbus IFF), Všetko čo mám rád (Grand Prize from Cottbus IFF), The Garden (Grand Prize from Cottbus IFF, Czech Lion for Best Director and Best Script, as well as the Critics’ Award, Special Prize of the Jury and the Ecumenical Jury Prize from Karlovy Vary IFF), and Gypsy (Special Prize of the Jury, Don Quijote Award and Label Europa Cinemas Award from Karlovy Vary IFF), among others. He is also a documentary director, mostly famous for his TV series project dedicated to the Czechoslovakian New Wave. He is also a producer.
