"THE WILD PEAR TREE" by Nuri Bilge Ceylan will be the closing film of the main 23rd Sofia Film Fest's programme

Nury Bilge Ceylan's eighth full-length film - "The Wild Pear Tree", co-production between Turkey, France, Germany, Bulgaria (RFF International), Bosnia and Herzegovina, Macedonia and Sweden, had its premiere in the main competition of Cannes 2018 and it was warmly accepted from audiences and critics. The international press was unanimous with the excitement from this "mesmerizing verbal fugue", created by "astonishingly complex spoken recitatives that weave philosophy, religious tradition, and ethics together". (Jay Weissberg, Variety)

The new creation of the Turkish master tells a story of young Sinan, who is passionate about literature and has always wanted to be a writer. Returning to the village where he was born, he pours his heart and soul into scraping together the money he needs to be published, but his father’s debts catch up with him... The destiny likes to play tricks on people and often offers interesting surprises...

"The Wild Pear Tree" is a gentle, humane, beautifully made and magnificently acted movie from the Turkish film-maker and former Palme winner Nuri Bilge Ceylan: garrulous, humorous and lugubrious in his unmistakable and very engaging style. It’s an unhurried, elegiac address to the idea of childhood and your home town – and how returning to both has a bittersweet savour... It is another deeply satisfying, intelligent piece of film-making from Ceylan..."
Peter Bradshaw, The Guardian

The producer of the film is Ceylan's longtime creative partner Zeynep Atakan. The Bulgarian co-producer is Stefan Kitanov.

"The Wild Pear Tree" was made with the support of Bulgarian National Film Center and in partnership with Nu Boyana Film Studios.
